23 Things - The Second Thing

In my opinion, a good blog clearly states a purpose and must include a good title to begin with! I looked at one on the education link given that was listed under "Art," and the title led me to believe I would actually be able to learn something new that I might be able to use in my classroom. Instead, the teacher rambled on and on about how she set a goal to post something new every day. She then posted a little bit about a Photography assignment that got me excited but didn't give many details about it. After that, there was a recycled denim project she talked about a little bit with a picture or two of students at sewing machines, followed by some really great Photography work that looked like a final project that students may have created, but there wasn't really much description to go with it. I was disappointed. Blogs need to have a CLEAR purpose with a title that indicates the purpose, and then it must be detailed and organized. Another good blog would have links to related information!

A blog would be a great way to hear back from the community, parents, and students about some aspect in education in general, something specific going on at Kenowa Hills, etc. It could provide updates, ideas, etc. It would be fabulous as long as people weren't allowed to get on and BASH like you see on so many sites out there!

I do believe that blogs are an easier for people to self-publish. I think of my Photography classes, and I think it would be great to have students post/publish their best Photography and allow people to respond to it! It would also be a great way for students to see how each of them interpreted or responded to a particular Photo Assignment I gave them!

When I watched Web 2.0, I thought it looked great, but we have SOOOOOO many restrictions at school that I can't see students and teachers being able to do even a 1/4 of what I saw there. Students can't access email, Facebook, they can't text, they can't look at their phones during school, they can't access youtube, itunes, and the list goes on. Until the reigns are loosened, we, and students, are VERY limited by what they can do at school...
